High levels of radiation found in 16,000 imports from Fukushima Prefecture, South Korea Shows

Dana: Growing food around a nuclear meltdown is a act of terrorism and genocide. At some point every single human on earth will have to acknowledge that despite the fact people are complacent right now the day is coming when the entire world will hate Japan with a vengeance, for this.

High levels of radiation were found in roughly sixteen-thousand imports from regions surrounding the power plant ...A South Korean lawmaker has called for import restrictions on Japanese processed foods from areas affected by the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. Citing reports from the food safety ministry earlier today, Kim Kwang-su said thirty-five cases of high levels of radiation were found in roughly sixteen-thousand imports from regions surrounding the power plant. Kim said the current ban on imports of all fishery products from eight prefectures around Fukushima, which has been in effect since 2013, is not enough for public safety. (news report video, here) 

Displaced Fukushima sake brewery to restart in hometown using only local rice ... Although part of Namie is still under evacuation orders due to the effects of the nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, the company's head, Daisuke Suzuki, 46, says he wants to work to eradicate the rumors about rice cultivated in Namie by using it as the sole ingredient in its sake. As fears linger, Fukushima rice rebounds under anonymity  ... FUKUSHIMA--Shipments of Fukushima rice have rebounded since the 2011 nuclear disaster, but Masao Matsukawa, a rice farmer in the prefecture, is not happy about the situation. Before the triple meltdown at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, most of the rice grown at Matsukawa’s farm in Sukagawa was sold for household use. Now, the bulk of his annual harvest of 15 tons is designated for “industrial use,” mainly by convenience store and restaurant chains, and simply labeled “domestic product.” (here)

Seniors urged to eat Fukushima rice to help farmers, protect young people, by Minoru Matsutani ... He said his reason for doing this is not only because he wants to help Fukushima farmers, but also because he wants to make sure elderly eat as much Fukushima rice as possible to prevent children from accidentally eating the grain. There are no regulations obliging restaurants and makers of “bento” (boxed lunches) to list the origins of the rice they use, and this may led to children eating Fukushima rice, he said. “Therefore, why don’t the elderly, whose potential for suffering health damage (from radiation) is lower than it is for youths, eat all of the Fukushima rice?” he asked. Farmers are required to check radiation levels in their rice. If the level of radioactive cesium exceeds 500 becquerels per kilogram, they are banned from selling it. Hirai, who is also a member of the Skilled Veterans Corps for Fukushima, a group consisting of elderly people who have experience working at nuclear plants, said another reason for promoting Fukushima rice is that he wants to gain support from residents so he and other group members can be asked to work at the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant so that younger, more vulnerable, workers don’t have to. Lawmaker calls for import ban on processed foods from Fukushima ...  South Korea should restrict imports of processed foods from Japan's Fukushima region as radiation has been found in shipments, an opposition lawmaker said Monday. South Korea banned all seafood imports from eight Japanese prefectures near Fukushima in 2013 on concerns over their radiation levels in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear power plant meltdown. But no import restrictions have been put on processed foods from the areas. Citing data from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Rep. Kim Kwang-soo of the minor opposition Party for Democracy and Peace said radiation has been discovered in 16.8 tons of processed foods imported from the eight prefectures, or 35 shipments, over the past five years.  "It is urgent for the government to take necessary action against processed foods from the eight Japanese areas since they pose a serious risk to public health," the lawmaker said. No import restrictions have been imposed on the processed foods, though a recent ruling by the World Trade Organization (WTO) has allowed Seoul to retain the import ban on 28 kinds of fish caught in the eight prefectures, he said. Radiocesium inventories of selected north pacific fish in the wake of fukushima

Abstract: Thirteen commonly consumed types of fish caught in the North Pacific and locally available in Hawai‘i were analyzed using gamma spectroscopy to measure Fukushima-derived and historic 134Cs and 137Cs isotopes. All fish samples had detectable 137Cs above 95% confidence intervals. Three out of the thirteen samples had 134Cs, an isotope indicative of Fukushima releases, detected above 95% confidence intervals. The highest 134Cs and 137Cs concentration in the examined species was in ‘ahi tuna, carrying 0.10 ± 0.04 Bq/kg and 0.62 ± 0.05 Bq/kg, respectively. Other samples with 134Cs activities found above their 2-sigma uncertainty were albacore tuna and swordfish. Historic and Fukushima-derived contributions were evaluated, and in several samples the Fukushima-derived radiocesium dominated the total radiocesium inventory with up to 61% contribution. All activities were below derived intervention limits of 1,200 Bq/kg, and the doses to humans from consuming the fish attributable to radiocesium were 0.02–0.2 µ Sv, in comparison to 6–20 µ Sv contributed by the natural 40K present in the same fish.  (story, here)—  & —(different info, video here)
